A subgrade compacted to 95 percent of maximum dry density holds a foundation flat for decades. A shortcut on that same subgrade shows up two winters later as a cracked slab and water in the crawl space. We treat the dirt as the structure it is, and we test compaction with a Proctor-based check before we call any pad finished.
